Capturing the Spirit of HEMA: A Photoshoot with a Local HEMA Club Member

Recently, we had the pleasure of photographing a member from a local Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) club. This was an exciting opportunity to capture not only the essence of the martial arts tradition but also the personality and dedication of a practitioner. Here's a glimpse into this unique photoshoot experience.
What is HEMA?
HEMA involves the study and practice of historical fighting techniques using a variety of weapons, such as longswords, rapiers, and sabers. It's a growing martial arts movement, combining physical skill with historical accuracy and discipline. This shoot allowed us to explore a fascinating culture full of rich history and dynamic movement.
Planning the Shoot
The goal was to highlight the artistry, precision, and passion that define HEMA. We discussed with the club member what moments were most meaningful to capture—stances, weapon techniques, and even candid behind-the-scenes moments.
For the location, we opted for an outdoor setting. The natural light helped bring out the textures of the member’s gear, including the armored gloves, padded jacket, and mask.
A Play Between Action and Stillness
Throughout the session, we alternated between dynamic movement shots and static portraits. Action shots required high-speed photography to freeze sword strikes and parries mid-motion, showing the athletic side of HEMA. We captured these movements from different angles to showcase the fluidity and power behind each technique.
For the portraits, we aimed to convey the calm, focused mindset of the practitioner. These images highlight not just the equipment but also the emotion—the passion and determination that drive someone to train in this demanding discipline.
